Geocaching

Geocaching 2

Geocaching is an outdoor activity where people use a GPS device or smartphone to find hidden containers, called geocaches or simply caches, at specific coordinates all around the world. There are more than 3 million active caches worldwide and Walton County Parks has decided to join in!

Geocaching can be viewed as a real-life treasure hunt! Most caches are small, waterproof containers that hold a logbook and sometimes a pen or pencil. Some larger caches, like big plastic containers or ammo boxes, may also include small items or trinkets you can trade. These objects are usually more sentimental than valuable, but they add a fun element to the adventure. Adventure is the key! Many caches are on trails or in areas not normally explored. ADA accessible caches are also available.

RULES:

  • Sign the log: Always sign the logbook with your username and the date.
  • Be respectful: Mind the people not geocaching and be respectful of others using the park. You can come back, don’t draw undue attention.
  • Trade items responsibly: If you take an item, leave one of equal or greater value. Make sure all items you leave are legal, family-friendly, and never food, as it attracts animals.
  • Move trackables: If you take a "trackable" item, log it online and move it to another cache as soon as possible, according to its mission.
  • Leave it as you found it: Put the geocache back in the exact spot and orientation you found it in so other geocachers have the same experience.
  • Log your find online: Log your find on the geocaching website or app and write a log detailing your experience but avoid spoilers.
  • Take care of the area: Stay on marked trails, don't damage plants or other natural features, and do not dig or bury anything
  • Cache in, trash out: It’s a common practice of Cachers to try and collect litter while searching for caches to improve our parks and environment.
  • Geocache at your own risk: Walton County BCC and it’s subordinates are not responsible for nature, animals or how either interacts with you.
